Under the editorship of Prof. Dr. Bent Gebert, De Gruyter publishes the anthology Wettkämpfe in Literaturen und Kulturen des Mittelalters. Riskante Formen und Praktiken zwischen Kreativität und Zerstörung as the 43rd volume of the series Trends in Medieval Philology.
The studies in this volume illuminate phenomena of competition from late antiquity to the late Middle Ages from various disciplines of medieval studies - from historical science and art history to old German studies, English studies, and Latin studies. The focus is on the question of their risky potentials: To what extent do agonal forms and practices of pre-modernity put at risk the orders they produce? The contributions trace this tension between productive and destructive dimensions in different genre, linguistic, and discourse contexts: in the competitive relations of Latin poems of dispute and saintly vitae, in courtly game didactics and their iconography, in romances of antiquity, Arthurian romances, and adaptations of the Tristan material, in fairy tale poems, and in the practice of courtly and urban literary games.
